Beltane (or May Day) is close by and is well known for the maypole. This article will show you how to do a miniature version for your altar. I was myself looking on the internet on how to do a smaller one but wasn't satisfied with my findings so I decided to improvise.
What is a maypole?
A maypole is painted pole, often decorated with flowers and other nature-related ornaments. On Beltane, people traditionally dance around it holding ribbons. There's two kind of maypole. The first is made with a spinning disk holding the ribbons so people can dance in circles. The second is easier to make, as the ribbons are attached to the top of the pole, but people need to dance and turn in a specific way to braid the ribbons. It is said that the maypole has a phallic symbolism, as Beltane is mostly about love, passion and lust. It can also symbolize Yggdrasil.
Why an altar maypole?
This alternative is perfect for the solitary witch (a maypole dance alone is probably not the same), especially when you can't meet up with fellow witches for the celebrations. It's very easy to make, as it took me longer to find the parts than making it. It's also a very cute decoration that brings colours to your altar.

What you need?
A stick - Any kind is fine, but I personally used a dry rose stem I had laying around. The rose is often connected to love and passion, which is why I thought it would be perfect!
A hoop - I used a solid bracelet I wasn't using anymore, but you can also use an embroidery hoop or even a painted carboard circle if that's all you have.
Coloured ribbons - I was lucky enough to find ribbons while cleaning my bedroom one week before Beltane, but you can also use cut pieces of fabric.
What to do?
Attach an extremity of your ribbons at the top of your stick. I just did a simple knot.
Cut your ribbon a little longer than the stick.
Repeat steps 1 and 2 as much as you want. I attached 8 ribbons so my hoop could hold easily.
Tie a knot on your loop with your ribbons.
It's done! Yes, it's that easy! No glue, no sewing, it's that simple! You can find a base if you want, but I like that my altar maypole is free and that I can dance with it. You can put it in a small vase.
Now you're ready to celebrate! Don't hesitate to send me your results!
